Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment refers to the treatment for gum disease often performed by a periodontist or gum specialist.  Gum disease usually develops when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line.  Periodontal disease or gum disease is an infection that affects the gums and the underlying bone that supports the teeth.  It begins with the bacterial growth in the mouth and if not properly treated may cause tooth loss due to the destruction of the tissues that surround the teeth.

Common Causes of Periodontal Disease:

  1. Plaque
  2. Poor oral hygiene
  3. Bad habits like smoking
  4. Illnesses of diabetes, cancer or HIV
  5. Gum disease runs in the family

Some signs and symptoms of periodontal disease:

  1. Prolonged bad breath
  2. Bleeding gums
  3. Swollen gums
  4. Painful and sensitive teeth
  5. Receding gums

Non-surgical and surgical are two types of periodontal treatment.

Non-surgical Treatments:

  1. Scaling – removal of tartar and bacteria on tooth surfaces and underneath the gums
  2. Root planing – removal of rough spots on the tooth root where the germs gather
  3. Antibiotics – may include mouth rinses and gels, or a locally administered antibiotic.

Some of the Surgical Treatments:

  1. Flap surgery – removal of tartar deposits in deep pockets which involves lifting back the gums and removing the tartar
  2. Bone grafting – a natural or synthetic bone is placed in the area of bone loss
